About St. George Forane Church, Edathua
St. Mary’s Church Koilmukku, renamed as St. George Church Koilmukku, now better known as St. George Forane Church Edathua, is one of the prominent and prospering foranes under the Archdiocese of Chaganacherry. Most Rev. Raymond, the Vicar Apostolica of Varappuzha Vicariate, granted the canonical` permission to construct a church at Koilmukku, Edathua in 1810.
Founded on 29 September, 1810, the Edathua Church wields a profound influence in the spiritual, material, social and educational realms of the thousands of people, belonging to various religious communities living in and around Edathua. A zealous and vibrant community of faithful, comprising of nearly two thousand families have nurtured it as the apple of their eye, transforming Edathua in to a prominent pilgrim center in South India.
The Church owns a first grade Arts and Science College, a Higher Secondary School, two High Schools, three Lower Primary Schools, an Industrial Training Center and a Residential English Medium School.
The religiously rich soil of Edathua gave birth to the Congregation of the Sisters of Adoration of Blessed sacrament in 1906 and the Franciscan Third Order for lay men by Puthernparampil Thommachan. The first vicar of Edathua Church was Rev. Fr. Valiaveettil Geevarghese Kathanar and the Present Vicar is Rev.Fr. Kurian Puthenpura, from June 2007.
